MSNBC anchors Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell couldn’t hold back their elation over Democratic victories in the Virginia elections on Tuesday.
Democrat Ralph Northam beat Republican Ed Gillespie in the gubernatorial race, but the two were especially tickled by the fact that Democrat Danica Roem, who beat “homophobic” Delegate Robert G. Marshall, will serve as the nation’s first openly transgender state legislator.
“For Danica Roem to beat Bob Marshall, the guy who authored the Virginia bathroom trans ban, the guy who called himself the ‘homophobic-in-chief,’ the guy who has ridden prejudice against the LGBT community to a 22-year career…for Danica Roem to beat him, it shows you that sometimes history is written with a caps-lock key,” Maddow gushed.
“It tells you that sometimes history is not subtle about these achievements,” she continued.
“It feels like tonight’s history is being written by movie writers–it is so dramatic,” O’Donnell chimed in.
