On Tuesday, MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” provided evidence to suggest the White House’s attempt to distance President Donald Trump from his former campaign adviser George Papadopoulos was faulty.
While “Morning Joe” showed an image of Papadopoulos sitting at a table with Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, among others, in 2016, Willie Geist pointed out Papadopoulos “was one of the first officials Trump named as a foreign policy adviser.”
‘Really?“ co-host Joe Scarborough asked in an apparent attempt to feign surprise. His co-host, Mika Brzezinski, echoed in a similar tone, ”What?”
The show also played audio of Trump telling The Washington Post’s editorial board that Papadopoulos was an “excellent guy” who would join his foreign policy team during the 2016 presidential campaign.
“George Papadopoulos — he’s an oil and energy consultant, excellent guy,” Trump said in the recording.
“Trick or treat,” Brzezinski said, following the clip.
That segment came just after Trump tweeted that Papadopoulos was a “low level volunteer” and a “liar.” Papadopoulos pleaded guilty Monday to providing false statements to the FBI regarding his contact with Russians.
On Monday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders similarly described Papadopoulos’s involvement in the Trump campaign as “extremely limited” and a “volunteer position.”
