When Meghan Markle was only speaking as an American actress, she often expressed her political or any kind of views openly.
But now as she is set to become a British Princess, experts say Markle must learn how to embrace her new role and the self-censorship it comes with it.
Markle acknowledged her “social consciousness,” which required that she “speak up” to perceived injustices.
Her openness was displayed before the 2016 election when she declared her support for Hillary Clinton.
The actress explained her choice by saying Donald Trump was “misogynistic” and “divisive.”
She will also have to remain neutral on international matters she dealt with as a part of her United Nations ambassadorship and volunteer efforts at World Vision.
But, she will be able to continue her advocacy through organizations with royal affiliations.
“I can see that this is going to be a real problem in the months and years ahead for her, an existential problem,” he said.
Lacey said that he will not be surprised if Markle wasn’t invited to the reception for a presidential visit, given her comments about President Trump.
Dickie Arbiter, Prince Charles’ former press secretary, explained a political neutrality will be required for her after the wedding.
“It’s a bit like going in the goldfish bowl,” he said. “Everything changes. What she was able to say before she came into ‘the firm’ is very different to what she is going to be able to say now. It all changes.”
While Markle’s activism isn’t unprecedented, Lacey said it’s not a common matter for the family.
“You have to go back to Prince Philip to think of a recruit to the family who is so evidently feisty and spiky,” he said.
Arbiter believed Prince Harry has told Markle about requirements of the new role.
“He knows she has been outspoken, but all that has to stop,” he said. “She is going to have to adapt. I am sure she is on the road already.”
Markle has already started to change her public persona, seeing how she has abandoned her social media accounts on which she was frequently sharing her political views.
